Celebrate visibility, bodily autonomy, and intersex community pride with the Intersex Pride Flag.
The Intersex Pride flag was designed in 2013 by Morgan Carpenter and has become one of the most recognizable symbols representing intersex visibility, wholeness, and self-determination.
The flag intentionally avoids traditional gendered color associations by using yellow and purple — colors historically connected with intersex identity because they exist outside the common pink/blue binary often associated with gender.
At the center of the design is an unbroken purple circle symbolizing:
- Wholeness
- Completeness
- Bodily autonomy
- The right to self-determination
- The freedom to exist authentically
As Morgan Carpenter explained, the circle represents being “unbroken and unornamented,” reflecting the intersex community’s ongoing fight for bodily autonomy and the right for individuals to define themselves on their own terms.
Intersex is an umbrella term describing people born with or developing sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary definitions of male or female bodies. These natural variations may involve chromosomes, hormones, reproductive anatomy, or secondary sex characteristics, and can become apparent at birth or later in life.
Simple, bold, and deeply meaningful, this flag is perfect for Pride festivals, classrooms, community spaces, bedrooms, offices, events, and everyday visibility.
