The Leather Pride flag has been an important symbol within leather, BDSM, fetish, and kink communities since its debut in 1989 at Chicago’s International Mr. Leather event, created by designer Tony DeBlase during the 20th anniversary year of the Stonewall Riots.

Originally associated with leather culture, the flag was later embraced more broadly throughout BDSM and fetish communities as a symbol of identity, solidarity, respect, passion, and chosen community. The design features alternating black and blue stripes, a white center stripe, and the iconic red heart in the upper corner.

DeBlase intentionally left the symbolism open to interpretation, but many people commonly associate the colors with:
