The Transgender Pride flag was created in 1999 by Monica Helms, a transgender woman and activist. Since its creation, the flag has become one of the most recognized and important symbols of transgender visibility, identity, resilience, and pride throughout LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

According to Helms, the design was intentionally made symmetrical so that no matter how the flag is displayed, it is always “correct,” symbolizing self-discovery, authenticity, and finding correctness within one’s own identity and life.
